Lewis Hamilton believes that Formula 1's We Race As One campaign is just words. According to the seven-time world champion, the sport needs to be more active in striving for diversity and inclusion.

F1's campaign focuses on sustainability, community and diversity and inclusion. The latter aspect came into the spotlight after the Austrian Grand Prix. There were several reports of unpleasant behaviour from spectators. Female fans at the Red Bull Ring, for example, were the victims of sexual harassment.

Formula 1 announced that the abuse of some fans is unacceptable. Hamilton wrote on social media that he is disgusted by this kind of behaviour. After the race, the Briton was asked what F1 could do to combat fan abuse. It is suggested that the We Race As One campaign has been quite effective.

Hamilton: "It's unacceptable"

"I've not given huge amount of thought in terms of coming up with solutions for what the sport should do," Hamilton responds. According to the Briton, the sport should work towards diversity and inclusion. Hamilton himself launched Mission 44 in 2021 to create more opportunities for underrepresented groups of young people in motorsport.

"It's time for action. We Race as One was all good and well, but it was just words. It didn't actually do anything; there was no funding towards anything; there was no programme to actually create change and spark that conversation. So, definitely need to utilise our platforms, as I just mentioned, but we really have to step up and actually really start actioning some of the things we're saying. Just saying… it’s not enough. It’s unacceptable."
