Five-time World Champion
Lewis Hamilton has admitted he would like to get "close" to
Schumacher's records in the back end of his career.
Hamilton already holds the record for the most pole positions, but still has some distance to go on the race win record (91) and podium record (155). His fifth crown last weekend moves him level with Juan Manuel Fangio and two short of Schumacher's seven.
Hamilton, 33, signed a two-year-deal with Mercedes in the summer which lasts until the end of the 2020 season. Usually, Hamilton claims he's not a major fan of records, but that is now no longer the case.
"I'm very, very fortunate to be up here now, obviously with more than most people have, and I don't take that for granted. Whether or not I'm going to have the chance to win more, who knows? I'm going to give it everything to do so," Hamilton told Autosport.
"The 91 wins that he [Schumacher] has, for example, that's a lot of wins. There's still a long way to go but I'm here for a few more years, so I'm hoping that I can at least get close."
Not including Schumacher's return, the German set those records within a 15-year career. Next season will mark Hamilton's 12th season in Formula One.
The Brit requires 21 more wins and an additional three podiums to clinch both records from Schumacher.
