Fresh out of the Williams car on Wednesday, Robert Kubica delivered his early verdict on the new F1 2019 front wings and the challenges that they will pose to teams. The Pole was on driving duty on Wednesday having taken over from Williams' other reserve driver Oliver Rowland.
Speaking after completing his running for the day, Kubica commented on the difference in feel that the new regulations already posed and the makeshift 2019 wing Williams used in the Hungary test left him with a vastly different feeling already but said that it was too early to form final opinions on the change.
"The wing is a lot wider and you will notice that clearly. It is only too early to have an opinion about it. The test was mainly to gather data about the air flows," he toldSport.pl.
In 2019, new regulations will be introduced with the aim of improving wheel-to-wheel racing by allowing drivers to follow each other more closely. This will hopefully be accomplished with the new simplified front wings such as the one Robert Kubica tested. Due to the current complexities of the front wings in F1 and the reliance in downforce for cars to go so fast, it means that the driver behind has a much more difficult job in keeping up with the one in front because of the turbulent air.
