Pirelli reveals best starting tyre's massive advantage

On the build up to the Japanese Grand Prix, F1's official tyre supplier has revealed what the best starting tyre will be for the mixed conditions race.

The rain came down on the Suzuka Circuit earlier in the day, leaving the tarmac with damp patches all over. Should there be no more rain prior to the start, then when the lights go out, the grid will get off the line with dry tyres on.

The grid faces tyre dilemma ahead of Japanese Grand Prix start

Pirelli now reveals the massive grip advantage the soft tyres have on the rest. The C3 compound tyres will reach the 150 KPH mark 2,76 meters sooner than the C2 medium compound tyres.

The C1 hard compound tyres are the least effective for the race start as the Italian manufacturer estimates them to reach the 150 KPH mark 7,04 meters later than the C3's.

However, the tyre degradation levels will also vary, so the 'obvious' choice for the start, will come at a price later on. Red Bull Racing did race simulations on the soft compound tyres and the pace drop off was severe, whilst the gap to the McLaren's on the mediums was also significant.
