It was an exciting qualifying session at
Istanbul Park for the Turkish GP. Rain and a new layer of asphalt gave a surprising result. Both
McLaren drivers have received penalties, so this is what the preliminary grid looks like for tomorrow's race.
The big surprise of today is of course
Lance Stroll. The last couple of races the Canadian driver has had a lot of criticism, but in Turkey the
Racing Point driver was able to show his qualities again. Stroll's performance was particularly notable as
Max Verstappen was giving a master class in driving in the rain. The Dutchman now has to settle for second place, ahead of
Sergio Perez in the other Racing Point.
The result that was written down just after the qualification, however, is by no means final. The stewards have asked multiple drivers to explain themselves, including
Lance Stroll. The Canadian got away without a penalty, but others can't say that.
Carlos Sainz received a grid penalty of three places for hampering Perez and
Lando Norris received a grid penalty of five places for ignoring yellow flags.
George Russell will have to go to the stewards for the same offence, although he already has engine penalties This is what the starting grid looks like for the time being.
20. George Russell*
