Carlos Sainz probably had the fastest car, but the Ferrari driver leaves Melbourne without points. After a failed qualifying session, the Spaniard spun off the track early in the race. A big disappointment for him.

Misjudgment

Sainz was pretty lucky that he didn't tap any other competitors off the track in his slide. For himself, the Grand Prix thus ended in the gravel pit. Although Sainz had managed to keep the engine running, he didn't manage to get away again. In retrospect, it seems to have been a mistake to start on hard tires, because they were the cause of Sainz not getting into his rhythm.

To Speedweek Sainz said he had doubts about this. "I'm not sure if that was right or wrong. What is certain is that I misjudged the grip. But there was more than that, because my steering wheel had to be replaced a minute before the warm-up lap."

Disaster

Then a problem in the ABS soon surfaced. "I then wanted to get back in front as soon as possible. I made a mistake, because the hard tires probably weren't up to temperature enough to step on the gas like that. The whole weekend was a bit of a disaster and now we have to learn our lessons and make sure these mistakes don't happen again," said the Spaniard.
