For the second time in history, Formula 1 will be a guest in Miami. A year ago, Max Verstappen was the winner in a Grand Prix that kept up because of a safety car and hugely difficult conditions for the drivers.

It was a great afternoon for Verstappen at the blood-hot street circuit, which did not receive overwhelmingly enthusiastic responses in terms of layout at the time. The Dutchman looked to be heading for an easy win, having started from third in qualifying behind two Ferraris. Until Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris collided and the safety car entered the track.

After the light went green again, Verstappen had to work hard to keep off Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. That worked out fine, by the way, with the Ferrari men finishing three and eight seconds from the winner respectively. Retrospectively, it is hard to imagine, but after that race in Miami, Leclerc was (still) the championship leader. Admittedly, the Monegasque's lead dwindled due to Verstappen's win, Leclerc led by 104 compared to 85 points at the time.

After the race, the drivers were fairly exhausted. Indeed, not only was it very hot, the humidity was particularly high. These conditions were also predicted for this weekend. Verstappen said of it last year: "It is very hot in sector two and because the race is during the day (compared to Singapore where it is also very hot), it only gets hotter with the sun. I was glad we had the straights so you could get some fresh air and behind the safety car the visor could also be raised a bit to get more fresh air.''
