Russell does not know why he signed a two-year contract but says he wants to stay with Mercedes for a long time to come.
An embarrassing moment for Mercedes driver George Russell during the Singapore Grand Prix press conference. He was asked several questions about his contract extension at Mercedes. A fortnight ago, the Formula One team announced that both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell had been given two-year contract extensions. When asked why he signed for two years and not longer, the Mercedes star had to confess that he did not know either. Russell: "I don't know why two years, to be honest. I think that was mutual between us both." Russell added that he sees the contract as the following: "This is a long-term partnership between the two of us, and we want to continue building on what we've built over the last couple of years, the lessons we've learned".
Russell also said he saw his contract as a formality and had never really doubted the extension. According to the single F1 race winner, the extension was actually the plan two years ago. The British driver clearly intends to stay with the German team for a long time to come. His big role model in terms of relationships is, unsurprisingly, teammate Lewis Hamilton. "It was sort of never really in doubt and a bit of a formality, really. So when I signed two years ago now, this was always the plan to be together and hopefully try and keep this relationship as Lewis has done with the team. And obviously, I can only dream of success like they have achieved together," the Briton continued.
