The Grand Prix weekend in Las Vegas has many standouts. One is the cold temperatures. Because of the cold temperatures and because it is a new track for everyone, a lot remains unclear about tyre wear.
After a short FP1 and a consequently prolonged FP2, much is still uncertain. In the free practice sessions, the F1 drivers were on different tyre strategies, so there is still little to say about tyre wear.
Russell indicated to Sky Sports that other tracks with cold temperatures showed that it is difficult to get and keep the tyres at a good temperature. He thinks that if you can get the tyres working properly, a one-stopper might be possible for the race. But if you suffer a lot of tyre wear it could be a two, three or even a four-stopper. So it is important for the Mercedes team not to become one of those teams this weekend.
The Brit goes on to say that the track evolves every lap. "The track is evolving every single lap. So the first lap you did, you would sort of drive around on ice. No grip, you can visibly see the dirt and the dust so every lap you do you're learning you're going faster the track's going faster braking points are changing. It's tricky when you’re going 230mph into both braking zones picking your your braking point."
