George Russell has revealed that there are ongoing discussions about the future of the F1 regulations due to porpoising issues causing drivers pain. Mercedes seem to be struggling with it the most, with Lewis Hamilton having difficulties getting out of the car at the end of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The Azerbaijan circuit features an extremely long straight meaning drivers were bouncing for a long time every lap. Russell explains just how brutal it is, and confirms talks are ongoing about making changes to the regulations.
"Pleased to be standing on the podium because at the end you need to be there to pick up the pieces. That is what we did. It's just what we have to deal with at the moment and we as drivers have to accept it. No short-term changes, but there are discussions ongoing regarding the long-term future of these regulations hold. Let's see. We have a lot of brilliant engineers and people in this sport and they will find a solution," Russell told Sky Sports.
"I don't know what the solution is at the moment at the end of the day a majority is in the same boat as us. Bouncing up and down, and hitting the floor or you don't and you run the car mm from the floor and hitting the ground lap after lap."
Once again, Russell finished inside the top five to maintain his 100% streak of doing so this season. The Brit secured yet another podium as he continues to pick up the pieces from reliability issues in front of them. The young Brit has Charles Leclerc in his sights and was already ahead of Sainz going into the weekend.
Active suspension? Why not give Lewis a complete autopilot with brake assist included for Baku next year.
I hope teams that have gotten on top of porpoising oppose this nonsense. Team that have gotten it right should be allowed to enjoy this year. They can change the regulations next year for suspension systems to eliminate porpoising completely.
Just stop crying and fix the problem (Merc doesn't make mistakes right?). No regulation changes were made during the Merc dominance to help other teams to get closer.
Raise the ride height so the bouncing stops. As long as there are teams that have solved it, MB with all their top engineers can too. Maybe temporarily raise the wind tunnel speed although the ones that already solved it would be negatively affected. I'm sure most users on here wouldn't agree to the FIA looking into it if MB had no porpoising amd RB had. So be objective with your comments like you guys also were with the weight limit saying RB should just make their car lighter since it was their own fault.
This is ridiculous. Merc just have to increase the ride height it's as simple as that. They are running too close to the ground. We all had to suffer through 2014-16 with that token system that meant Merc maintained their 1-2 second per lap advantage throughout that period with other teams unable to make a dent. Why is that anytime Merc have an advantage the FIA won't touch them, but the moment a team like RBR have an advantage they change the rules. It was the same 2009-13 when RBR were competitive the FIA would outlaw or change the rules any time they had an innovation, while Merc allowed to maintain their 1-2 second lap advantage for three straight years.
The FIA should let the teams go to active suspension and eliminate the known issues from years ago using ground effects. Why do you think F1 went totally away from ground effects for all these years?
Active suspension and Red Cross System for MB if any new obstacle comes. Or maybe to suspend WC till they construct new car , copy of F and RB. Don’t be funny , how F and RB race this year and they are not bouncing so much. The MB team has failed design car , thats their main problem.
