In the past,
Ferrari have always been known to employ mainly current stars of F1, but in recent years it has increasingly focused on young talent.
Charles Leclerc is of course the best example of this and now
Mick Schumacher is also breaking through from their junior programme. The fact that they are now employing one of their best people to accompany these talents shows how seriously they take it.
Jock Clear, one of the most experienced engineers at
Ferrari, has been
Charles Leclerc's driver coach since 2019. As of next season, he will also fulfil this role for the other Ferrari talents. This means that he will not only work with Schumacher but also with Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman.
Ferrari wants to make the most of the potential of talents
"We want to use him even more as a driver coach - not just for Charles, but also for our young drivers in view of the future we have at the Ferrari Driver Academy," said
Mattia Binotto to
Motorsport-Total.com.
"Jock's role is to help drivers develop and make the most of their potential. He looks at their lines, how they brake, how they accelerate and how they handle the tyres."
Jock Clear has been in
Formula 1 for over 25 years. He started as a racing engineer for Johnny Herbert at Lotus. He won the world title with
Jacques Villeneuve at
Williams, went with the Canadian to BAR, where he eventually worked with
Michael Schumacher and
Lewis Hamilton under the
Mercedes flag. In 2015 he made the switch to Ferrari.
