Haas F1 have come out of the testing weeks having given a very strong impression. The American outfit were one of three teams who didn't use the new, faster hypersofts, but still managed to feature at the top end of the table on multiple occasions. The better understanding of tyres was the main reason for that, Haas boss Günther Steiner says.
The main struggle in the first two years of the team have been the tyres, and the understanding of tyre-management. They struggled to get the right temperature for maximum grip, which cost them valuable time on the track. According to Steiner, this pre-season's success is mostly down to the better understanding of the compounds.
"We got them to work," he said on the F1 website. "We aren't using any hypersofts here, but we got them to work on all the other compounds."
"The ultrasofts, everyone seemed to have the same problem. Nobody really goes from the supersofts to the ultrasofts any faster. But we tried it, and the conditions here from 11:30 onwards don't go rapidly down, it's just warming up. We worked on the ultrasofts and we got a little bit more understanding. All in all, we're pretty OK."
Finally, Steiner speaks on the reliability issues Haas did seem to have. After McLaren they were the team that ended up with the least laps completed.
"We had a few reliability issues with body parts in the first days," Steiner admits. "We need to fix them and that will already be an upgrade to what we are running now, as we are currently a little bit compromised."
"We'll get that all fixed and then add a few parts that we had planned from before."
