Max Verstappen came out of the
Austrian Grand Prix as the convincing winner. Behind the Dutchman, however, a thrilling battle took place between
Valtteri Bottas,
Lewis Hamilton and
Lando Norris.
The
McLaren driver set a strong qualifying position by driving the second-fastest time on Saturday afternoon. Hamilton hoped to pass his fellow countryman in the race, but that was easier said than done. Norris wasn't going to be beaten easily and held Hamilton back for a long time, causing the Mercedes driver to wear out his tyres. When Hamilton did get past Norris, he complimented him.
However, the seven-time world champion experienced problems with his car during the race, which prevented him from achieving his normal lap times. It gave Norris the opportunity to get past Hamilton and onto the podium. Bottas stayed away from that battle and managed to finish second, almost 18 seconds behind Verstappen.
Battle in the midfield
There was also a lot going on in the midfield. For example,
Carlos Sainz and
Charles Leclerc were able to turn their mediocre qualifying into fifth and eighth place respectively. Sergio Pérez had to settle for sixth, while Fernando Alonso made sure that he and not
George Russell ended up in the points.
