Stoffel Vandoorne has not had the best season so far at
McLaren, and it seems as if he career has somewhat stagnated. However, he could be handed a way out of McLaren by Renault.
The Belgian has scored only eight points this year, less than Sauber’s Charles Leclerc, whilst team mate
Fernando Alonso has 32 points.
This poor form has sparked rumours about a potential exit for McLaren, and
Cyril Abiteboul has said that Vandoorne would be on their radar, should
Carlos Sainz be recalled by Red Bull.
Abiteboul told Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure: “Do not say that Stoffel will join Renault because it is absolutely not the case.
“But he is a driver that we look at. When I wonder about the possible options, I take Vandoorne into consideration.”
Abiteboul uses Vandoorne’s form compared to Alonso as a reason for a potential move.
“I think his situation is quite difficult. He was fast, talented and consistent in all of the lower categories and there is no reason for all that to disappear,” he added.
“But when you have Fernando next door it’s complicated, especially in McLaren’s circumstances of recent years.
“But he is a high level driver that we can look at in the future, depending on how our situation evolves.”
