McLaren are aiming to go for the driver title this season in Formula 1 after winning the constructor title last season.
With Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the team has the only two Grand Prix winners of this season in its ranks. However, Peter Windsor believes this could cause problems.
On his own YouTube channel, Windsor explained the most important thing he saw happen during the Chinese Grand Prix: "For me, it was Oscar Piastri beating Lando Norris in terms of the big takeaway from the weekend. And we have a championship, don't we? If it's going to go to McLaren, what we want is those two guys racing. And as I've said from day one, if you want peace and quiet at McLaren, you want Lando to sort of float into his first world championship in a graceful way, you have a Daniel Ricciardo in the other car or a Sergio Perez, you know, but you don't have an Oscar Piastri."
The Brit continued: "Because they have taken that option [to put Piastri in the car], we have a Mansell-Piquet, Moss-Fangio, or Senna-Prost situation. Mansell-Piquet, Moss-Fanio, Senna-Prost situation, and that's great. That's great for Formula One because the racing is never closer or better than when it's two teammates in identical cars. And when I say racing, I don't necessarily mean overtakes, hashtag. I'm not an overtake stat guy. For me, close racing is tension."
In the first race weekend of the season, Piastri scored only two points. Norris, on the other hand, won that race. However, after the second weekend, the difference was only ten points. While Norris only scored one point in the sprint race, his teammate received seven points for second place. When Piastri also beat the Brit to win the Grand Prix itself, he extended his lead even further.
Windsor currently sees that McLaren is not intervening regarding the fights between the two McLaren drivers. According to the Brit, that is not the problem: "The problem is the decision to have Oscar Piastri. As I keep saying, it's nothing to do with the way they run it now. Once you've got Oscar Piastri in the team, you're going to have drama. You're going to have a fight between the two."
