Formula 1 will face a new sprint format for the first time on the streets of Baku, Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur announced yesterday. Opinions differ on the changes in Formula 1. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is open to changes, though.

'Important to keep tradition and history alive'

The Austrian sees opportunities for the sport, he told Motorsport-Total.com: "I think we all have the same goal. We want to continue to develop the sport well and grow its audience. Whatever Stefano (Domenicali) thinks is good, he will have the numbers on the table, which is good for the spectators and what is good for the Formula 1 brand."

The sprint format is not the only format Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali wants to change. Among other things, he we also suggested the idea of fewer free practice sessions. Wolff therefore does not think that everything should change. According to him, it is important that Formula 1's tradition and history are maintained though and that things should not be changed just like that, but looked at carefully.

So the new sprint format will in all likelihood be introduced in Baku in three weeks' time. However, Wolff sees a problem here, namely the number of tyres teams can use. According to him, there will not be enough of these if there is a change. So a solution has yet to be found here.
