Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is expecting the tight battle for supremacy in Formula One to hot up even more as the circus heads into Spain for the fifth round of the championship.
Wolff’s Mercedes team have only won one race this year, that being Lewis Hamilton’s dramatic and unlikely victory in Azerbaijan in April.
Despite only winning one of four races, Mercedes and Hamilton top the constructors’ and drivers’ championships respectively.
The Silver Arrows have had it mostly their own way for the last four years, but the top teams have got a lot closer for 2018, with many believing that Ferrari have the best car.
Wolff said: “The first four races indicate very strongly that we will see the three-way battle continue and if anything – intensify.
“We’re hoping that this year’s Spanish Grand Prix will be a good race for us, but we know that it will be tough.”
The Spanish Grand Prix is typically one of the most unpredictable in Formula One, with ten different drivers winning the last eleven races in Barcelona. Hamilton is the only current driver to have won twice in this period.
