Toto Wolff is already busy in his search for a replacement for
Lewis Hamilton, who recently suddenly announced he was swapping
Mercedes for
Ferrari in 2025.
Fernando Alonso is one of the drivers being linked with the
Formula 1 seat at Mercedes, and it appears not without reason: Wolff met with Alonso's manager, former
F1 team boss
Flavio Briatore.
Wolff in talks with Alonso's manager Briatore
Alonso is seen as one of the candidates who has caught Wolff's eye. This would put another multiple-world champion alongside
George Russell. The
Aston Martin driver also fanned the flames by pointing out that he is
"the only world champion who is free" in 2025, although he said he will first engage with his current team before deciding on his future.
The interest from Mercedes certainly appears to be there, as
Flavio Briatore, once team boss of Benetton and Renault and currently Alonso's manager, posted a picture with the Mercedes team boss on his
Instagram on Monday. On the same day that
Aston Martin unveiled their new 2024 F1 car.
Prior to the launch of the AMR24, Alonso stressed that he would first talk to
Aston Martin about his future and that he had not yet heard anything from Mercedes, but now that seems to have changed.
