Wolff: 'We lost the race on Saturday with Hamilton'

Toto Wolff can be satisfied after the Hungarian Grand Prix. Mercedes finished with both drivers on the podium for the second race in a row. However, the team boss does not want to cheer too soon.
George Russell drove a surprising qualifying session on Saturday and took pole position, but in the race the poleman was unfortunately beaten by teammate Lewis Hamilton. The Briton had to defend against the Ferrari drivers at the start of the race and ended up fighting several times.
"George had a great qualifying session with pole and drove a super solid race but he was always in the fight and therefore utilizing the tyres and leaning on it a lot. Then he ran a bit out of tyres at the end of the second stint," Wolff told Sky Sports.

Wolff would have liked to see fight against Verstappen

Hamilton started the race from P7, but eventually managed to finish ahead of his teammate. "He was a bit in the shadow and no one was looking at him and then suddenly banged in lap times quicker than the leaders. If he didn't fail the DRS who knows? I think there would have been a fun fight for victory," continued the Mercedes team boss.
At Ferrari, the race was dramatic with another poor strategy. Things went particularly wrong for Charles Leclerc, as the Monegasque had to make a third pit stop after being put on hard tyres by Ferrari. "They took the risk to undercut us and go very early on the tyre. It's not clear if it was a 1 stop or two-stop. It was too early for us and they took the gamble and it paid off."
"At least we have a result that we can work with. W had a very bad Friday so w know what not to do, but Spa is very different. Let's not celebrate yet, because we are still behind," Wolff finished.

Is this a Max fanboy page ? Been watching f1 for years and Max and Lewis are head and shoulders above the rest. Charles is nearly there but not quite.

As I said in the beginning Hamilton will end will above Russell ,he is not in the same class .

Hamilton is not able to overtake Max. So you didn t lose on saturday. Besides that who did have engine problems and started behing hamilton?

Gnasher 02 August 2022 at 08:59+ 267

And who had DRS issues and started 7th and not potentially 1st? LH can overtake Max as easily as he was able to overtake Sainz. Wrong tyre strategy, mistakes etc. Anything in F1 racing is possible. Max himself knows that all too well and yet here you are.

Anything in racing is possible, the one thing that is not possible anymore is Lewis beating Max. Lewis tried everything last year to unsettle Max - claiming that Max is feeling the pressure of winning his 1st WDC, giving Max the impression that because of his success he doesn’t feel the pressure, trying to ‘race’ Max on track at COTA in FP1 to intimidate him … and Lewis still came up short!

And Max got the job done with the entire world and watching, under immense pressure and most significant of all, his very first time he was able to challenge for the WDC!

Redbul also need perez to come to play like the two merc n fer driver so tge game can be exciting as now we no longer believe that perez can make an upset

What was interesting was seeing the onboard of Checo as he came upon Max after the spin. He slowed almost to a stop so as to not pass Max. Any other driver and he would have been passed and clearly up the road. He should be doing better, but one does wonder why after seeing that.

So you started ahead of max ! You started ahead of max on medium tires , and you still lost ? No the win was never on the cards . Verstappen made a fool of the entire grid today , and Red Bull of course .

What your puny ignorant mind fails to fathom is; with LH on pole (not 7th) then the race dynamics could have been entirely different for everyone but more so for the championship leader. RB team strategy could have been drastically affected, bit more under pressure, with potentially lots of mistakes. Just common sense.

If Lewis was on the front row you can be rest assured that Max would have stormed the girls to make sure that Lewis doesn’t win.

Every race that Lewis finished P2 this season so far it was Max who won the race. Max is almost toying with Lewis - by beating him every race or preventing him from winning is just a reminder to Lewis that he will be 2nd best as long as Max is racing.

Toto
Your mind is lost

Your meaningless, thoughtless word vs the Merc's TEAM PRINCIPAL. Go figure.

Cry fuking harder, it takes alot for Mercs to be in with a sniff. Of all trans ran competent strats and had no mechanical issues the best Mercs can dream of is 5th. Max started from 10th due to pu issues, had a clutch problem during the race, spun and he still clapped the field. Max is easily the best driver in the grid. Cry harder to the FIA with toto reeeeeeeeeee change the rules mr FIA hahahaha

Anthony Bailey 31 July 2022 at 18:48+ 4524

Toto knows how lucky RB got with Hamilotn having a DRS issue. Even with the 3rd fastest car on the grid, a Hamilotn in the top two on the starting grid is VERY VERY difficult to beat. Just saying LOL !!!

CJ77 31 July 2022 at 18:41+ 10555

Ifs and buts. Do you think either would have bothered Max today if he didnt have PU issues and qualified in the front 2 rows? He wouldnt have sat around behind George for the first stint conserving tires. He would have been passed and long gone up the road. The Ferrari strategist messed up the instant they covered Max in early pitstops. If they had carried on to plan and made use of their tires, they would have went medium and then soft at the end like Hamilton and ran a better race. Would have had 2nd and 3rd behind Max.

Be real, Toto. Max won it from 10th by 10 seconds with a 360 and Charles was leading by 6 seconds before that strategic blunder happened.
God only knows how were they going to win it with Hamilton qualifying a bit ahead.

dasitall 01 August 2022 at 09:41+ 264

Oh leave Charles out of it. I had a suspicion that Ferrari strategy would fail him once again and that happened. Not sure he would have had a chance against the car Verstappen was driving.

If Max didn't have engine problems yesterday who knows? If Ferrari strategy teams wasn't a bunch of clowns who knows? Who knows who knows?

With Russell's superb qualifying time to get P1, even if Hamilton didn't have the issue with his DRS, he was still not going to out-qualify Russell.
That being the case, both the Mercedes would have been on the same tyre strategy, and he would have thus finished behind Russell.
He managed to overtake, because Russell was on 20+ laps medium tyres, while Hamilton was on new softs.
Hami would likely have been worse off by finishing in P3 instead of P2, as Max would still have got ahead of everyone.

Carfan73 01 August 2022 at 11:34+ 126

How can you know he could not out qualify Russell? That is an unknown. Probabilities count for nothing, what counts is the result not ifs and buts.

User Avatar
Wim Horst 01 August 2022 at 12:07+ 6997

and forgetting Max his qualification problem, if Max had no power loss he would be in front, and like Mercedes drivers say Max was cruising so Max would be the winner toto and not Lewis.
