The most talked about addition to F1 in 2018, the halo has given teams a new problem with providing sufficient airflow into the cars cooling, particularly under the roll hoop of the car. Renault have found some unique solutions.
If you haven't heard about the halo safety device, this year made mandatory on all cars in Formula One and in lower categories, then you might have been living under a rock. Luckily it won't be hard for you to notice it, however what might be more difficult to see are the solutions each team has come up with to help generate enough airflow to cool the cars.
Renault have taken a highly unique approach with two minor details that could make all the difference in a sport that is known for its attention to detail. Speaking to Peter Windsor on Motorsport.com's weekly show motorsport.tv, Craig Scarborough highlights two small details on the RS18.
"Renault have done two quite interesting things," says Scarborough. "The most obvious is they've put a little down-facing winglet on a strut on the roll hoop – just to grab the air and direct it down into the duct, which we don't see very often around the roll hoop area, so that's unique.
"Then they've done something that's also quite clever. The drivers are now wearing Schuberth helmets, and they have a custom crown spoiler that comes off at the back. That now merges from the helmet perfectly into the headrest so the driver's head isn't affecting the airflow."
Whether other teams follow suit will remain to be seen. However both additions to the Renault are clever details that could make a difference this season.
