Today, a presentation of the MadRing took place, with the project sharing a video of a lap around the circuit, and Williams driver Carlos Sainz being present as an ambassador.
On Thursday, the MadRing YouTube channel shared a video of a virtual F1 car driving around the circuit that is set to become part of the calendar in the 2026 season, under the Spanish Grand Prix name. As a result, there will be two F1 weekends hosted in the country, as the Barcelona circuit still has a contract for the upcoming season.
The day before, Marca could also report that the track will now have a building permit given by the Madrid council on Friday. With this permit, the circuit can 'begun to be built immediately'.
Sainz encouraged by MadRing project
The Williams driver is set to have a Grand Prix in his home city next season, and he is also an ambassador for the project. At the presentation event, Sainz underlined that he is very positive and will be very dedicated to help the track improve.
"I've been asked a lot about the layout in the paddock, and what I can tell them is that I'm going to do my best to make the circuit a great show. We can be the best circuit in the world and the best event on the entire F1 calendar. There are many street circuits like Mexico City, Miami, and Las Vegas, but I'm confident Madrid can beat them," he explained.
About the layout (also portrayed in the video above), he continued: "I want a track to have character, to have something that makes it different. I would define it as a hybrid track: an urban area, with walls close together, which gives the rider a lot of adrenaline, and a more open, traditional-style area, which is what we riders like most. Banked, fast, and intertwined corners are what we like most. And this track has both."
When will the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix take place?
Recently,
GPblog could reveal where things stand
in terms of the calendar for the 2026 season.
According to Marca, the Spanish Grand Prix will be hosted around September, however, it will depend on the negotiations with the Mexico City Grand Prix. As our website listed above, out of Imola, Mexico City and the flagship event of Las Vegas, one would have to miss out with one of the slots going to the MadRing.
