The history of the Ferrari F1 team
Ferrari are the most successful F1 team of all time, having won 16 Constructors’ championships and 242 Grands Prix. Alberto Ascari was the first driver to win a Drivers’ world championship with a Ferrari in 1952. Juan Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn, Phil Hill, John Surtees, Niki Lauda, and Jody Scheckter all won a Drivers’ championship with Ferrari, giving the team legendary status during the early years of Formula 1.
After Jody Scheckter’s title in 1979, Ferrari struggled to return to glory, even with talented drivers such as Gilles Villeneuve and Alain Prost. Then came arguably the most well-known Ferrari driver of the modern era, Michael Schumacher. The German won five consecutive titles with the Prancing Horses from 2000 until 2004 and got the most pole positions, and race wins at the time.
Kimi Räikkönen won the team’s last Drivers’ championship in 2007, but after Felipe Massa lost out on the 2008 title against Lewis Hamilton (they still won the Constructors’ championship), they have failed to win a title ever since. Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, and Charles Leclerc all finished second in the championship driving for Ferrari behind Red Bull and Mercedes, respectively. On the other hand, every year, Ferrari are expected to be amongst the frontrunners and at least challenge for the titles.
Ferrari in 2024
Ferrari are currently competing to finish in second place in the Constructors’ Championship in 2024. After finishing third last season, they will be looking to return the favour on Mercedes and keep McLaren behind. After the first two races in the 2024 Formula 1 season, Ferrari were looking positive. Although they remain somewhat behind Red Bull, they seem to be a clear second.
Oliver Bearman made his Formula 1 debut in a Ferrari car during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend. Sainz required surgery on his appendix and had to miss the Grand Prix.
Who drives the Ferrari car?
The Ferrari car will be driven by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr during the 2023 Formula 1 season. It will be their third season together as a teammate duo. Sainz has a contract signed until the end of the 2024 season. Ahead of the 2024 season, Ferrari announced Leclerc will stay with the team beyond the end of 2024. Soon after, Ferrari confirmed Lewis Hamilton will join the team in 2025, replacing Carlos Sainz.
Which engine will Ferrari use?
Ferrari develop their own engine as they have been doing so since 1950. They make their engines in their factory in Maranello, Italy. Ferrari also supplies other teams, as of now, Haas F1 and Alfa Romeo use a Ferrari engine.
