Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have long been negotiating a contract extension. Toto Wolff has spoken out several times about how much he would like the seven-time world champion to opt for a longer stay at Mercedes, and Hamilton too has made no secret of his desire to stay with Mercedes. On Sunday, confirmation of a contract extension was rumoured to come before the Dutch Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Nicolas Hamilton, Lewis' younger brother, posted a funny post on Instagram about the distribution of seats at Mercedes.
Hamilton is still seeking an eighth world title, but this seems impossible for now, due to Verstappen's dominance. The Briton is currently fourth in the world championship, just one point behind number three Fernando Alonso. The gap to Verstappen is already 166 points, and even if Mercedes makes strides that make them faster than Red Bull, it seems an impossible task to turn it around yet.
So despite that, Hamilton does still fancy a longer stay in Formula 1. Incidentally, he is not the only one in his family speculating about a seat in the pinnacle of motorsport. On Instagram, Nicolas Hamilton posted a post joking about a seat next to his brother: "Hmmm, Toto & @mercedesamgf1 want me to be teammate to big bro @lewishamilton for 2024 …. Should I pick up?"
