Alpine is looking for a replacement for the departing Fernando Alonso. Oscar Piastri does not seem to be the right candidate, so the French team has to move on. On Saturday, Pierre Gasly was once again linked with a move to Otmar Szafnauer's team. Would that be a smart move for Gasly?
The Frenchman seems to have hit a dead end within the Red Bull Racing family, as Helmut Marko recently hinted in an interview that a second chance at the big Red Bull as Max Verstappen's teammate is out of the question. Once his contract with AlphaTauri expires after the 2023 season, Marko would have no problem with Gasly leaving for a team that is a little higher up the pecking order.
Gasly's place at AlphaTauri is secure and he is appreciated, but there doesn't seem to be much prospect for the future. Alpine is a factory team and Gasly may be able to take the next steps in his career there. However, the question is whether switching to the team from Viry is the right move. Renault and Alpine have not performed well in Formula 1 for years and the question is whether that will change in the coming years.
It may also say something that Fernando Alonso will retire after this season and sign with Aston Martin, the number nine constructor after 13 Grand Prix weekends.
Perhaps Gasly would be wise to simply serve out his contract at AlphaTauri and wait a year longer. In 2024 there will be a lot more places available and he might be able to command a better step than moving to Alpine now. What do you think of the proposition? Gasly is wise to move to Alpine in 2023. Fill in the poll and join the discussion in the comments.
