At the meeting of the
Formula 1 Committee on Monday, Red Bull's proposal to freeze engines from 2022 was also discussed. It was already known that
Ferrari is against the plan, but there are other options as well.
Mercedes supports Red Bull's plans to stop engine development from 2022 onwards.
Ferrari is opposed to it, as are
Renault, says
The Race.
It is important for Red Bull to have clarity about the future of the team's engine before the end of the year. Red Bull prefers to take over the
Honda engine without having to invest in the development of the engine, thus reducing part of the financial and technological burden and avoiding becoming a customer of an engine manufacturer again.
Bringing forward engine rules 2026
Another option which has been discussed is to bring forward the new engine rules which will apply from 2026. This will also allow new manufacturers to join.
Renault boss
Cyril Abiteboul’s idea of a think-tank of experts to discuss the direction F1 takes for its next engine appears to have been taken on as a potential objective.
