Oscar Piastri will get the chance to make his first metres for Alpine in Abu Dhabi. The Australian, who in all probability will win the Formula 2 title this weekend, will make his appearance in the Young Driver Test.
Debut for Piastri
After the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix there will be a Young Driver Test at the same circuit. Here the F1 teams can test, but for that day they have to use a young talent. Piastri was recently announced as Alpine's new reserve driver, so it's not surprising that the French team is pushing him forward.
''I’m very excited to drive in the Young Driver Test. It’s almost like my first official day in my new job for next year when I become the Team’s Reserve Driver. Any day in an F1 car is pretty special but to drive the current one with other drivers on track in a somewhat competitive environment is very cool. Thanks to the team for this opportunity, I’m certainly looking forward to it and working through a very full testing programme on the day'', Piastri said in the press release.
Alonso and Ocon also in the car
''Oscar has had a fantastic Formula 2 season this year, again showing his class, and this Young Driver Test appearance is well earned. This test will be part of Oscar’s ongoing development as he prepares to become the team’s Reserve Driver for 2022, to aid and assist Fernando and Esteban and our development teams on and off the track,'' said Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi.
Besides Piastri, Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon will also make metres in Abu Dhabi. After the Grand Prix they will test the new 18-inch tyres for 2022 on behalf of Pirelli. They will drive with an old R.S. 18. Piastri will be driving the current Alpine car for the YDT.
