MGU-H disappears from 2026: FIA opens door for Audi and Porsche

The FIA has presented its plans regarding the 2026 engine. The most striking is the disappearance of the MGU-H. This opens the doors for new engine suppliers in Formula 1, as the Volkswagen Group together with Audi and Porsche have repeatedly stated that dropping this engine component will be the deciding factor on whether or not they join the premier class of motorsport.
The exact details of the engine regulations for 2026 are yet to be finalised and will be presented to the World Motor Sport Council in early 2022, but we already know that the regulations are based on four pillars. This can be read on the website of the FIA.
Pillars for 2026 engines
- Retain the 1.6-litre V6 engine
- Increase electrical power to 350kW
- Eliminate the MGU-H
- Introduction of a Power Unit cost cap
In addition, the FIA has decided that Formula 1 will run on 100 percent renewable fuel in five years. In 2022 a first step will be taken by switching to E10 fuel, which consists of 10 percent ethanol.
