Red Bull wins a lot of time in Imola: 'They're doing better than Ferrari now'
- GPblog.com
This season Ferrari and Red Bull Racing are engaged in an exciting title fight. Although the Italians seemed to be running away from the rest after three races, Max Verstappen's team made up an impressive amount of ground in Imola. With no less than 58 points for Red Bull against twenty for Ferrari, the lead in the constructors' classification has disappeared like snow in the sun.
Indeed, that gap is now only eleven points, while Charles Leclerc still has a comfortable lead over Verstappen in the driver standings. There the difference stands at 27 points. Former Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger sees that Red Bull has made a big step and that they are suddenly back among the favourites for the title.
Red Bull loses a lot of weight
Across Speedweek Berger shines his light on the current title fight. "It has been more difficult so far for Red Bull to get the tires in the right operating window. Ferrari was also better than it is in terms of weight, although Red Bull lost five kilos for Imola." Those Red Bull kilos have been a topic of conversation all season, as the car of Sergio Perez and Verstappen has been heavier than the competition all season.
Having already lost five kilos in Imola, Berger notes that they are going a lot faster."That's one and a half tenths per lap. Red Bull did just a little bit better than Ferrari in Imola and that proved to be enough to win. Fortunately, nothing went wrong this time." By which Berger is referring to Red Bull's reliability problems, which have already forced Verstappen to retire twice and Perez to retire in Bahrain.
