Fernando Alonso was strong all weekend in Canada, but probably did not expect himself to be allowed to start in second position on Sunday. In the end, he only had to let the unleashed Max Verstappen ahead of him.

"It feels great. It's been an unbelievable weekend for us so far. We have been competitive in the free practice sessions, although we usually are on Fridays, we then lose some speed on Saturdays. Thanks to the wet conditions today. The car was mega, I was so comfortable in it and I think the fans also pushed me extra," said a very elated Alonso after qualifying.
Alonso has a prospect of his first podium since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix, but the Spaniard himself wants more than a podium finish: "Let's see, I think we will attack Max in the first corner."
