In the preparation, Red Bull Racing seemed to have found more speed compared to Ferrari, but Charles Leclerc took pole position during qualifying. Partly thanks to a slipstream from Carlos Sainz.
"It was a great lap, I've struggled all weekend to put a good lap together and I finally did. But I must admit that I also had the help of Carlos and that was amazing teamwork. Without Carlos, it would have been much closer Hopefully, he can join us in the fight for victory tomorrow," Leclerc said after qualifying.
Surprise for Leclerc
The Monegasque had expected Red Bull Racing to be faster than Ferrari, after the last free practice sessions. "After Q1 I was very surprised with the pace we had and also in Q2, we were very strong. Somehow we managed to turn it around for qualifying, which was a nice surprise."
Nevertheless, Leclerc will continue to keep a close eye on his competitors tomorrow. "The car feels great, but it's hard to understand what the Red Bull guys did yesterday. Let's see how it goes tomorrow," concludes the Ferrari driver.
