Sergio Perez secured third place on the grid in Saturday afternoon's qualifying session for the French Grand Prix. It came as a surprise to the Mexican as well, as he looks back on a difficult weekend.

After a good period in the season, Perez had a tougher time in the free practice sessions in France. With sixth, tenth and fifth place finishes, he was not a constant factor for Red Bull Racing, raising fears that the driver would have a disappointing GP.

Perez sees recovery in own performance

In qualifying, however, things changed for Perez. The driver reached Q3 with a time of 1:31:335, more than a tenth and a half slower than teammate Max Verstappen. It was, however, good enough to keep Lewis Hamilton behind him and secure third place.

"Yeah, it's been a good recovery. I've been nowhere the whole weekend, to be honest," he reflected on the FIA press conference. "I've been struggling a lot. I think it probably has been my worst weekend up to qualifying really and finally we managed to recover well in Quali."
