Mercedes disappointed but Russell suggests "have to be satisfied with that"
George Russell started from P2 and survived against all the drivers going through the field with penalties to finish on the podium. Only Max Verstappen overtook the Mercedes driver to claim another podium. He held off Carlos Sainz with the help of a late safety car.
Mercedes strong race pace
Mercedes have had good race pace most of the season, and that appeared to be the case again in Monza with Lewis Hamilton climbing up from 19th to finish in the top five. The British driver speaks
"I said on the radio to the team, it doesn't matter if we're fast or slow we keep getting these podiums. We weren't where we want to be as a team but nonetheless, we can look back on these races with two podiums and a P4 so we have to be satisfied with that. We had to do something different to fight with Max and Charles, but they were too quick for us today. I am glad we did something different," Russell said in a conversation with Martin Brundle after the race.
Russell finished with a message for Queen Elizabeth II who passed away in the build-up to the Italian Grand Prix. Russell reflected on this in his speech after the race.
"Incredibly sad time around the world, and for the British people. But what a life and it's a life that should be celebrated," Russell added.
