Gasly on Tsunoda: 'He still needs to work on that'

For Pierre Gasly, the end of his long spell under Red Bull's wings is approaching. The Frenchman will drive two more races for sister team AlphaTauri, before making the switch to Alpine. There he hopes to fulfil his ambitions of competing for podium places more often.

Still, he will definitely miss AlphaTauri, especially one person: teammate Yuki Tsunoda. In the two years they worked for the Italian team, a tight bond has developed. To Motorsport-Total Gasly confesses he thinks the Japanese driver is a great person with a unique sense of humour. He even calls him a friend.

Leader?

Gasly has been AlphaTauri's leader in recent years. That role may soon fall to Tsunoda, who will have newcomer Nyck de Vries alongside him. Although De Vries is an experienced, older driver, he only drove one Grand Prix. The big question is whether Tsunoda is ready to be AlphaTauri's 'leader'.

"Time will tell if he has what it takes," Gasly said. "He came into F1 quite young and has improved tremendously. I wouldn't be surprised if he continues to improve. But he knows what he needs to work on: his self-control," said the Frenchman
