Daniel Ricciardo's time in Formula 1 is almost over (for now). Although the Australian is likely to return next year as a reserve driver, he will not be driving full time himself. Speaking to The Daily Mail, Ricciardo talks about his time at McLaren. The situation eventually became so intense that he started talking to a psychologist.

Ricciardo had a three-year deal with McLaren, but after two seasons, the team has decided to replace the Australian. Ricciardo is not delivering the hoped-for results and thus has to make room for compatriot Oscar Piastri. The decision came unexpectedly for the McLaren driver. "It's not something you can prepare for."

Ricciardo has actually been under pressure at McLaren for two years. At Red Bull Racing and Renault, the Australian performed excellently, but suddenly things collapsed. Together with McLaren, Ricciardo kept looking for solutions, but it just wouldn't work. "When you put so much into something and it doesn’t work out there is sadness. It gets to you. Last year it affected me a little bit too much. I wouldn’t be my usual bubbly self. I would be reluctant if someone said let’s go out for dinner."

Ricciardo went to a psychologist in 2021

So in 2021, Ricciardo went to a psychologist. It was hardest year he has ever had. "I was neglecting friendships and thought it would be good to talk to someone to make sure the two sides of my life didn’t cross over." Ricciardo is currently in talks with Mercedes and Red Bull Racing, among others, about a reserve role within the team. In 2024, he hopes to return to the grid with a full-time seat.
