Kevin Magnussen made his last-minute comeback in F1 at 2022 straggler Haas F1, but managed to grab his first pole position in Brazil. The Dane is almost speechless after the rainy, crazy Saturday afternoon in Brazil.
In a rainy and exciting qualifying session, it was still the big teams that held strong and advanced to Q3. There are always surprising drivers in wet conditions, but Magnussen drove his way to Q3 unseen in the first two sessions but managed to do the impossible for Haas in that final session. His first pole position was achieved through sublime timing.
Magnussen is almost speechless after first pole position
After qualifying, the Dane appears in front of the microphone: "I don't know what to say. The team put me out on track at exactly the right moment. We were the first out of the pit lane and it was a decent lap that got me pole. It’s incredible. Thank you to Gene Haas, Guenther [Steiner] and the whole team for this opportunity.." Magnussen also addresses his fans briefly in Danish and then says he obviously never imagined this when he woke up this morning.
When asked what the plan is for tomorrow in the sprint race, Magnussen lets it be known what kind of racer he is. Indeed, the Dane will use his opportunity: "Maximum attack, let’s go for something funny." Only 24 laps will be run tomorrow. The Dane is expected to be quickly passed by Max Verstappen's Red Bull. On the other hand, rain for the sprint race is also not out of the question and Haas' top speed was very high on Friday. Therefore, the sprint race is also still open and the Dane could stunt again during the sprint race.
