Porpoising was a big issue for Mercedes in the early part of the 2022 Formula 1 season. This became a safety issue for the drivers, with Lewis Hamilton hurting his back following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. It wasn't an issue for some teams, but Toto Wolff fought hard to get his point across to apply a technical directive.

Netflix's Drive to Survive embedded their cameras inside an F1 team principal meeting where this topic was on the agenda. Mercedes boss Wolff is seen reacting strongly to the issue and it created a heated moment.

Fly on the wall

"I hear lots of chit-chat talking about porpoising. It's like Chinese whispers through the press, some emails being sent. I can tell you, all of you are playing a dangerous game. If a car ends in the wall, because it's too stiff or it's bottoming out, you are in the sh**. And I am going to come after you. If you think this is a game of performance, then you are very very wrong," Wolff was heard by the Netflix microphones during a team boss meeting.

Christian Horner then asks if he is playing up to the cameras that were present inside the room. "If you've got a problem, change your f****** car," Horner replied. As the team meeting ends, Guenther Steiner comes out with perhaps the best comment of the whole series: "Let's go porpoising."
