The first free practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix lasted only a few minutes as a technical problem with all the cameras around the circuit compromised safety when the session was due to resume. Fernando Alonso bitterly regretted the technical malfunction, he told Sky Sports.

The Spaniard was not given more than three laps in the first practice session. After Pierre Gasly's Alpine stalled and the red flag fell, all teams and fans were left in limbo. Would the session still be resumed and what exactly was the problem? There would be no more driving during the first free practice session, after which it was decided to extend the second practice session by half an hour.

'A bit embarrassing'

"It was a shame," states two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. "I think it was not ideal for the teams, but mostly it was for the fans that came very early to the circuit, and we were not able to run in FP1." But then the Aston Martin driver goes a little further: "From time to time it seems that we are shooting (ourselves) in our feet as a sport. These things are a little bit embarrassing." Alonso would have liked there to be a plan B, in case something went wrong with the camera systems. "But there was not one, as so often in this sport."
