Coulthard on Verstappen: 'You are watching someone special'
Former Formula One driver David Coulthard is full of praise for Max Verstappen's performance. The Scot sees the Red Bull Racing driver constantly rising above himself and praises the Dutchman and his team for it. In an interview with the official Formula 1 website, Coulthard additionally gives his opinion on some recent statements made by Lewis Hamilton.
Coulthard: 'You are watching someone special'
Max Verstappen already picked up 12 victories from the 14 Grands Prix held this season. In Monza, the Dutchman even took his tenth victory in a row, a new record. Coulthard admires the Red Bull driver's achievements: "Max has always stood out through all the lower Formulas. Ever since he arrived in Formula 1 and won his first Grand Prix – I think even before he was 18 – you know you are watching someone special."
The former McLaren and Red Bull Racing driver also compares the Dutchman to Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. According to Coulthard, you see the same with Verstappen as with the two greats of the sport he is compared to. Coulthard additionally sees another impressive trait: "What is super impressive is the maturity he has got at 25."
Coulthard on recent statements by Hamilton
Coulthard also responds to statements made by Lewis Hamilton recently. The Mercedes driver indicated that his teammates were stronger than Verstappen's teammates. The Scot refuted Hamilton's statements: "I know Lewis [Hamilton] had made a comment that he does not have tough teammates. First of all, that's not the case, and second of all it's not actually about who your teammate is, it's about who your competitors are, and his biggest competitor so far has been Lewis."
