Horner on relationship with Wolff: 'Haven't seen him since 2021'
- Cas van de Kleut
Currently, Red Bull Racing are the dominant team in Formula 1, and another World Championship is now within touching distance. In 2021, we were presented with a very exciting battle for the world championship, in which tempers often ran high. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told Corriere Della Sera about the battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
The exciting battle between Verstappen and Hamilton in 2021
The season was downright exhilarating. Since 2014, Mercedes had been the team that won all championships every year. Red Bull, after their dominance between 2010 and 2013, actually had some weaker years again. Both on and off the track, it was a huge fight between the two teams. Verstappen and Hamilton became embroiled in a battle that was not decided until the last lap of the last race. In the end, the Dutchman took his first world title.
As team boss of one of the teams, it was also a fierce season for Horner. He says: "Before then I didn't have a grey hair, look now... It was hard, intense, many things happened on the track and many others off. We made an incredible effort to win."
No more contact with Wolff?
Off the track, then, it was also often a battle. Red Bull and Mercedes both tried to hinder the other team, by complaining to the FIA or race control. A good example is the 2021 Silverstone Grand Prix, where both men, when it was still possible to hear, went to the race organisers to complain about the incident between Verstappen and Hamilton on the opening lap. Things were not always friendly between the two team bosses. We are now two years on, and Horner is asked if the relationship between the two team bosses has improved: "I haven't seen him since 2021, so everything is fine."
