Will AI influence F1 according to Newey? 'Defining timeline is very difficult'
Thanks in part to the powerful RB19, Max Verstappen won the world championship last season. That car, of course, was developed by Adrian Newey and his team. The 65-year-old Briton, who is largely responsible for the Red Bull team's success, explains his expectations for the future with regard to AI.
AI stands for artificial intelligence (AI), which is the ability of a computer to exhibit human-like skills. AI is hugely on the rise in everyday life, but what about Formula 1? Is everything going to be replaced by robots and machines, or will humans always remain one step ahead? As to whether AI is going to influence Formula 1, Newey does have an answer.
Red Bull man Newey gives expectations
"At some point it will, but it’s much more difficult to ascertain the timeline. AI is a broad buzzword term but it’s really an extension of ‘machine learning’ with a bit of internet thrown in, and that’s been around for ages. We’ve been using stress analysis optimisers for years [FEA or finite element analysis] but the human ultimately still seems to be better than the optimiser," explained the Austrian racing team's technical man. "It’s a tool but they absolutely do not replace the human," the Brit concluded.
Red Bull Racing are among one of four teams that have yet to announce a launch date for the new car. On 13 February, Ferrari will present the new car for the Formula 1 season. Just one day later, Mercedes will announce the new W15. See an overview of when the teams will unveil their cars here.
