Jack Doohan realistic about F1 chances: 'Lots of good drivers coming up'
Jack Doohan acknowledges that the chances of him ever getting into F1 are dwindling by the day, he told speedcafe.com. The Australian has nothing on the calendar this year other than being a reserve driver at Alpine and hopes to show himself there.
Looking ahead to 2025 and the Silly Season attached to it, Doohan does see opportunities: “I think there's going to be a lot of opportunities, it'd be great obviously to continue with Alpine in what that is, but I want to be a race driver. I want to get in the seat and I know I'll be able to perform as well.” The opportunities are certainly there for Doohan too. At the time of writing, there are over eight teams with at least one seat available in 2025.
Competitive Alpine
Earlier this month, he sat in the A521, the 2021 car, to do laps in Barcelona and get to know the car well. The idea behind it is to make the transition to F1 easier. That is why it is now expected that he will drive in a FP1 session twice in 2024, something he has done before in Mexico and Abu Dhabi. ''The FP1 running at the end of last year… we were just over half a tenth away from Pierre,” Doohan said. He continued: ''I'm confident that if I have to be put in the car that I can do the job. On the other hand, it's just reality as well and you have to be realistic.'' Alpine has talented drivers like Victor Martins, Kush Maini, Nikola Tsolov and Gabriele Mini in their academy as well.
