Why Alonso is sure he will not get another 'GP2 engine' from Honda
Fernando Alonso and Honda were not exactly friends, but they are now going to work together again after all. During the press conference, Alonso was reminded that he once called the Japanese F1 engine a 'GP2 engine,' but he would not comment on that.
Alonso has announced that he will stay with Aston Martin for longer. The Spaniard will drive for the British team at least until 2026, the year that Aston Martin teams up with Honda. Asked if Honda has been able to convince him not to get another 'GP2 engine,' the driver responded coolly.
Alonso and Honda to work together again
"Well, they are winning the championship now, so they are demonstrating that they have the discipline and the work that is needed to succeed in Formula One. Obviously, new regulations, no one knows what could happen in 2026. But yes, we are extremely happy to work with Honda and to be a works team, I think that makes a huge difference to what we currently have. That's a plus, and that's one of the reasons why I will stay with the new regulations and to have the opportunity to work with Honda again," Alonso said.
It is no secret that Alonso was also talking to other teams. The Spaniard also confirmed this in a media event with GPblog and others. In the press conference in China, Alonso was again asked about talks with other teams, but he did not want to elaborate on that now.
"as I said last week, I think there is no point to really talk too much because now it's done, and I'm with Aston Martin, and I would like to talk only about Aston Martin. And as I said last week, there were some talks with everyone. I think it is normal for everyone in this moment, but they were just light conversations," Alonso concluded.
