If it is up to the FIA, F1 cars will be thirty kilograms lighter from the 2026 season onwards. Lewis Hamilton already boasted in Canada "only thirty" kilos, because if it were up to the Briton, more weight would go off. Max Verstappen wholeheartedly agreed with his Mercedes rival.

Too heavy, too unwieldy. The current generation of Formula 1 cars are hefty behemoths. To increase the spectacle, among other things, the cars are slimmed down from the '26 season onwards. By thirty kilos, that is, but Max Verstappen believes - following Hamilton's lead - that this is not enough at all. "You need at least 100, 150 [kilos]," the Red Bull Racing driver told GPblog and others in Canada.

Verstappen wishes, but it won't happen

Unfortunately for Verstappen: that is currently unrealistic. "At the moment with how everything is, no. It's not possible. That is also to do with the engine, right? Engine, battery related, it’s very heavy and long and wide. At the moment it's wishful thinking, but that is definitely what we need to make it more agile and probably a bit more fun."

The fact that F1 cars are so heavy is partly to do with the fact that the cars have to be hugely safe. "Of course, safety added a lot of weight which of course is good, but I'm sure that we can do things a little bit differently, but it depends on the regulations that you write," Verstappen said.
