Why Alpine wanted to keep Gasly

Bruno Famin has signed his first driver as Alpine boss. The Frenchman has opted to extend Pierre Gasly's contract to 2025 and beyond as Alpine looks to build for the future. Famin hopes to use Gasly's experience to help push the team forward. He also gives an update on his hunt for a second driver, as Esteban Ocon is already confirmed as leaving.

The recent results of Gasly and Alpine are not particularly impressive, but the driver with number ten on the car has still achieved more points than Ocon, who is leaving after this season. Earlier on Thursday morning, the rumour came out that Sainz could become Gasly's new teammate. He might want to go to Alpine because Flavio Briatore is coming back to Formula 1.

Alpine sit seventh in the Constructors Championship but have scored six points from the last two races, two more than Sergio Perez

Why Alpine wanted to keep Gasly

“The extension of Pierre’s contract with the team is very pleasing. He is a driver with huge experience in Formula 1 and continues to show huge amounts of potential on-track. For Alpine as a brand, he is a great ambassador and we therefore look forward to continuing our collaboration," Famin said.

"While this is important for our future, we do have to keep our eyes close to what is coming and that is focusing on improving our current package. We have high ambitions this current season and we will work tirelessly to achieve those things. We will take our time in deciding Pierre’s team-mate and we are excited with the options we have on the table.”
