Piastri does not believe Red Bull will stay in the current situation
- Cas van de Kleut
McLaren is once again competing for the constructors' title. With Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the team has two drivers who consistently score points. At Red Bull Racing, the current championship leader, this is not the case. It is mainly Max Verstappen who has to bring in the points for the Austrian stable, Piastri agrees.
After 12 races, the difference between Verstappen and Perez is 137 points. A massive difference, which is mainly due to the Mexican's recent form. By comparison, the difference between Norris and Piastri is only 47 points. So they are a lot closer together. The difference between Red Bull Racing and McLaren is currently 78 points, but should McLaren continue to perform so well and Perez remain stuck in his current form, things could get exciting.
Piastri: 'McLaren is in contention for constructors' title'
Piastri thinks things could be fine: "I think we have confidence in our whole team, in the drivers, the car and everyone around us. We have scored the most points out of all the teams in the last six races. And yes, I mean, we are gaining ground on everyone around us. Obviously, the gap with Ferrari in the constructors' championship is now very small. We are narrowing the gap against Red Bull."
The McLaren driver continued: "At the moment, of course, only Max is the one scoring the most points [for Red Bull]. I don't think we can assume that will always be the case. We still have to do the maximum to score the most points for both cars, but I think we are confident of being in contention [for the constructors' title]. I think it would be incredibly pessimistic not to be optimistic about our chances later this year. I mean, of course we know it's not going to be an easy task and things can turn around very quickly, but yes, we are making the right steps at the moment and we are making good progress. So I think we are definitely competing."
