Hungary FP3 result: Norris P1 as McLaren impress, Piastri P2, Verstappen P3
Lando Norris and McLaren show that they are the team to beat at the Hungarian Grand Prix after taking P1 in the final free practice session, ahead of Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen in P2 and P3, respectively.
As it happened
It took just under 20 minutes of the first free practice session before the first push lap on the soft tyres was done. Only the Red Bulls of Verstappen and Sergio Perez set lap times in the first 15 minutes of the session, both on the hard tyres.
After finishing first in FP2 on Friday, Norris continued to show great pace and grip around the Hungaroring, highlighting that McLaren are the team to beat, with teammate Piastri sitting only +0.044 seconds behind Norris when the chequered flag fell. Verstappen finished two-tenths off the pace in P3, with George Russell and Carlos Sainz rounding out the top five.
Daniel Ricciardo, Alex Albon and Nico Hulkenberg were able to take P6, P7 and P8, respectively, showing the midfield battle is also heating up. Yuki Tsunoda took a very handy P9, with Lewis Hamilton only able to take P10, struggling with grip and balance through the session. He will hope that improves going into qualifying later in the day. Charles Leclerc was only good enough for P11, playing catchup in the final session after his FP2 crash. Perez's poor form continues to get worse. He could only muster P13 on the soft tyres.
