Horner praises Verstappen: 'Even with this car you can see his talent'
- Cas van de Kleut
Whereas Sergio Perez already seemed to have a lot of trouble with the RB20 earlier this season, the same is now the case for Max Verstappen. In fact, it looks like the Mexican is slightly closer to his Dutch teammate. Team principal Christian Horner answered GPblog and others on whether it is strange that Verstappen seems to be suffering more from the car's problems.
Verstappen can no longer compete for wins with the car he currently has, he said in Monza. The development of the RB20 has gone in such a wrong direction that the world champion is repeatedly talking about where they could improve now.
Perez, on the other hand, seems to be finding his feet a little better in the car, despite experiencing the same problems as Verstappen. In the Netherlands, for example, he scored a eight points finishing in P6. This was his highest finishing position since finishing in fourth place during the Miami Grand Prix.
Horner sees Verstappen's talent in RB20
So it seems that Verstappen is suffering a bit more from the recent problems than Perez. However, according to Horner, he still sees Verstappen's qualities in the RB20. "I think that on a low downforce circuit, and this type of circuit in particular [like Monza], it's highlighted that even Max with his talent, he's been able to. You can see flashes of it, like in Q2. As soon as you've got a bit of a balance, bang the lap time was there. But theoretically, putting new tyres on should always be quicker than old tyres," the team principal explained.
