Piastri got no advice from his manager Mark Webber on 'Papaya rules'
Oscar Piastri overtook Lando Norris at the start of the Italian Grand Prix. McLaren did not intervene with team orders either, causing a debate within the Formula 1 world. Piastri's manager, Mark Webber, has been in the situation himself where there was ambiguity about what was and was not allowed between teammates. The McLaren driver was asked by GPblog in Baku whether Webber gave him any advice on the situation.
The infamous 'Multi 21' incident included Piastri's manager Webber and his teammate Sebastian Vettel. The latter was instructed not to overtake his teammate, but this was not followed. In the Cooldown Room, it became clear that Webber was not happy with the situation.
At Monza, Piastri and Norris were in a similar situation, but no clear team orders were given. The Australian did not necessarily have to let his teammate go ahead or protect him from threats behind in the best interests of Norris' World Championship duel with Max Verstappen. Battling on track was allowed, but it was according to 'Papaya rules'.
Webber gave Piastri no advice on 'Papaya rules'
Piastri was asked if he got any advice from his manager Webber. "He's been very much involved in the discussions with myself and the team. I think some of the team orders and team disputes have been a very, very different set of circumstances to what we have. So, there's not been any direct advice on this is what happened last time. It's always been about trying to work collaboratively with the team on what we are willing to do in support, what I'm not willing to do so much, and more that kind of guidance rather than, yes, no, kind of watch out for this."
