There will no longer be a point awarded to the driver who drove the fastest race lap from 2025 season onwards. This was announced by the FIA in response to the World Motor Sport Council.

From 2025 onwards, there will be no point awarded to the driver with the fastest race lap, it was decided by FIA's council. In Singapore, Daniel Ricciardo 'earned' the additional point, in order to prevent Lando Norris from taking it, who may turn out to need that point in his championship battle against Max Verstappen

The message from the FIA

"Minor changes for 2024 and 2025 Sporting and Technical regulations were approved by the World Council, including the removal of the point awarded for setting the fastest lap and the increase in requirement for fielding a young driver during free practice from once per season to two times per season," read the organisation's press release.

Aspects of the 2026 regulations have also been clarified. Measures are being introduced to regulate the energy management of the Power Units. The same applies to the so-called 'adjustable aerodynamics'. In that area, the FIA has tightened the rules a bit more, so that no team steps outside the lines. Moreover, there will be three three-day pre-season tests ahead of the 2026 season.

Regarding the cost cap, regulations have been simplified, so it would become clearer wants counts towards the limit, and to "strengthen measures available to FIA to monitor compliance to the Financial Regulations." The level of the cost cap remains the same, however the actual number will change, given "the changes to exclusion and adjustment perimeter and the effect of cumulative inflation."

In the coming months, the FIA will submit it to the World Council for approval. This will allow the regulations for the 2026 season to be completed.
