Lawson left baffled by Alonso's grudge: 'Hopefully he can get over it'

Liam Lawson F1 says Fernando Alonso wanted to screw him after argument

Liam Lawson has responded to Fernando Alonso after the pair clashed for the second time at the Circuit of the Americas. The veteran Alonso felt hampered by the VCARB driver in the sprint race and then butted heads with the youngster once again in qualifying. After Saturday's sessions, Lawson gave his opinion on the incidents between the pair.

Lawson: 'Alonso said he would and kept his word'

In Q1 of qualifying for the US Grand Prix, the two for the second time. Lawson believes that two-time world champion Fernando Alonso impeded him on purpose. After their sprint race squabble, the Spaniard said that Lawson was fighting for his career and was clearly upset with his actions. "Yeah, I don't know, he said he would screw me, and I guess he kept his word," Lawson began in the paddock.  "I don't know, he was really upset. I’m not sure why, we were racing for P16. And I don't know why he was so upset. But yeah, I don't know. It is what it is. Hopefully, he can get over it and move forward," Lawson explained.

"I mean, I understand he had a pretty horrible race. So I can understand why he's upset. But, you know, if I did anything wrong, I would have got a penalty. So, yeah," Lawson continued. 

Lawson stays sensible: 'We'll get over it and move forward'

Lawson, clearly, has been thrown right into the deep end, developing a 'rivalry' with one of F1's greats. "I don't think we had a rivalry. I think we just had an incident in the race. And hopefully, we can just get over it and move forward." The Kiwi concluded.

Lawson replaced Daniel Ricciardo only a matter of weeks ago, and the United States Grand Prix will be his first of 2024 since his short stint with Red Bull's junior team last year, branded Alpha Tauri at the time. The Kiwi finished 16th in the sprint race and 15th in qualifying and will be hoping for better fortunes in today's race.
